What is CCTV?
CCTV (Closed Circuit Television) is a system of cameras of which closely monitor a home, business or public place. The images picked up by a CCTV system are transmitted to a TV screen on the premises or in some cases can be viewed from anywhere on a phone or other devices.
CCTV can be closely monitored by the owner or monitoring company who will alert the authorities to any suspicious activity. Depending on the storage system anything recorded on a CCTV camera can only be available for up to 30 days. CCTV is not always used for home security, for example some people use it to checking on their pets while out of the house.
A Study in 2012 surveyed 400 incarcerated Burglars and the factors that prompted them to avoid a particular target, 60% said the use of CCTV.
The most up to date CCTV systems we offer work perfectly when there is no light thanks to ‘dark fighter’ technology. This means that clients who invest in the most up to date CCTV cameras are able to access full colour images even when it is completely dark.
There are many reasons to invest in CCTV but perhaps the most pressing is captured by the single word ‘deterrent’. Nothing acts as a greater deterrent to someone who might be thinking of breaking into your home or business than the presence of CCTV cameras. You don’t have to take our word for that. The results of a survey published in The Guardian ranked the factors which burglars themselves rated as being most likely to deter them from trying to enter a property. At the top of the list, above ‘locked UPVC windows’, ‘strong doors’ and even ‘the sound of a barking dog’, was ‘CCTV cameras’. CCTV isn’t about recording what happens if your property is burgled, it’s about stopping the intruders in their tracks.
Most CCTV systems feature one or two cameras which are attached via a wire to a network video recorder (NVR) or a digital video recorder (DVR). The image captured by the camera is sent down the wire and recorded by the hard drive of the NVR or DVR recorder. The integrated nature of the Securenett CCTV systems means that the camera is also linked to the user’s app and the intruder alarm, meaning that alerts from both are easily visible on the same device. Technology within the app means that the camera can tell the difference between a pet and a genuine intruder, preventing multiple false alarms.
Once recorded, the footage is stored for a standard period of 28-30 days. Although it is possible to tailor a system to store footage for as long as 60 days, this does raise issues around data protection and GDPR.
As with all of our security offerings, the CCTV systems we install are designed to offer a bespoke solution for each client. For domestic clients we will fit a 2 megapixel camera, which offers images of the quality needed to be easily viewed on a smartphone screen. Clients looking for a system which can be viewed on a larger screen such as a monitor – or one which offers greater storage – will need to invest more than the standard price.
A basic system of this kind will act as a strong deterrent for domestic purposes, while a commercial system can be tailored to include features such as facial and number plate recognition. Commercial clients with multiple high value assets to protect may also opt for a monitored CCTV solution.
For a domestic property, the price of a CCTV system is approximately the same as that for an intruder alarm system, £699. For commercial properties the price of a bespoke system will depend upon the number and type of cameras, whether the system is monitored, and whether features such as number plate and facial recognition are needed.
